You can absolutely scroll through Pinterest or Google a list of books to start reading with your child.

You might run into these problems:

Reading levels reported on certain books are incorrect. It’s hard to know as a parent which level is appropriate for your child’s book club.

Because of my background in reading and my own experience as a mom, I know the books that your child will WANT to read and that are appropriate for their reading level. These second and third-grade books are vetted by me and are customized to raise your child’s reading level through the discussion and support of the book club.

If you choose your own books, they may be too easy or difficult. Easy books are great to read independently, but to put in the effort of filling in the books guides and discussing things they may already know, it can get “boring.”

More difficult books have the opposite effect. You do not want your child to be deflated and discouraged from reading a book that is too hard. Even with the book guide, if they feel they cannot answer the questions, they won’t participate and probably won’t end up reading the book.

Can you imagine the amount of time you will spend reading these other books and trying to outline the books? Let me take that overwhelming task off your to-do list and you can save yourself at least 10 hours a month!

Who is

Kim Creigh?

I’m a reading specialist, elementary school teacher, and mom of (almost!) four kids. I’ve worked with hundreds of kids from my time spent teaching fourth, third, and first grades, tutoring, and working as a reading specialist.

Now, I’m ready to spread my love of reading to others using information I learned in my Master in Reading Education program and from working with so many kids over the years!

MY CHILD IS IN FIRST GRADE. CAN I REGISTER THEM FOR THIS BOOK CLub?

The books I will be choosing for this book club are based on typical reading levels in second, third, and fourth grades. We will be increasing the difficulty of the texts as the year goes on. If your first grader is reading above grade level, they may be a good fit for the second grade book club. SOME OF THESE BOOKS ARE SHORT. ARE YOU REALLY GOING TO READ THEM FOR THE WHOLE MONTH?

Yes! Our first meeting we will preview the text. Please make sure your child has not read any part of the book for our first meeting (more details will be emailed when you enroll). I strategically break up the reading after that first book club time together. We will read sections of the book, working on fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skill based on the book.

MY CHILD CANNOT MAKE ONE OF THE DATES. DO YOU SEND A RECORDING?

I do not send recordings of our book clubs due for privacy reasons of the kids in our club! That being said, I have had some members skip a week or two and still feel a part of our group. As long as they catch up on the reading, your child will have no problems jumping in the following week!
